What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, answering the query directly and linking to the web pages they draw on. Google shows one when its systems judge a summary will help, so not every search gets one.
AI Overviews are written by a Gemini model from pages in Google’s index, with links to the sources shown alongside the summary. Google’s AI Overviews now reach more than 2 billion users a month (Alphabet, July 2025). They change what a top ranking is worth: when Google showed an AI summary, people clicked through to a website on 8% of visits, against 15% when it did not (Pew Research Center, 2025). AI Mode is the related conversational search mode, which answers follow-up questions the same way. To be eligible to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, with no special optimization, markup or AI text files; eligibility does not mean it will be shown. Pages that are crawlable, useful and clear about the facts are the ones that get linked. For a local search the summary may name businesses as well as link to pages, so the accurate profile, reviews and pages that support local results matter here too.

How do you show up in Google AI Overviews?
Google says the same SEO best practices apply: to be eligible, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and there is no special markup or file to add. Eligibility does not mean a page will be shown; pages that answer the question clearly and can be crawled are the ones it tends to link to.
