What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, a business is named or cited when people ask AI assistants and AI search features for recommendations in its category and area. It differs from a search ranking because there is no list of ten results, only the answer.
A search ranking tells you which position a page holds. AI visibility asks a different question: when a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews for the best option in a category and area, is the business in the answer, is it described correctly, and which sources does the assistant cite? It is measured by running the questions customers actually ask, across several assistants and more than once, because answers vary between runs and by location. Three things are worth tracking: whether the business is named at all, whether the details given (services, hours, area served, phone number) are accurate, and which pages or listings the assistant cites, since those are what to fix or strengthen. The inputs overlap heavily with local SEO: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings, reviews, and website pages that state the facts plainly. For a multi-location business it is measured per location, because an assistant may recommend one branch and miss another.
