What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work of making a business show up when people nearby search for what it offers: in the map results Google shows (the local pack), in Google Maps, in ordinary search results and in AI assistants. It covers the website, the Google Business Profile, listings across directories, and reviews.
Ordinary SEO competes for a place in search results for everyone; local SEO competes for searches with local intent, such as “plumber near me” or “dentist in Tampa”, where Google shows a map and a short list of businesses before the regular results. Google says it ranks those local results mainly on three things: relevance (how well a business profile matches the search), distance (how far the business is from the searcher or the place named) and prominence (how well known the business is, including its reviews and what the web says about it). Distance is fixed, so the work goes into the other two: a complete and accurate Google Business Profile with the right categories and services, a page on the website for each service and each real location, the same name, address and phone number across directories, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. For a multi-location business every location competes on its own, so each needs its own profile, its own page and its own reporting. Google also states that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

Regular SEO aims to rank a website for searches anywhere. Local SEO aims to appear for searches tied to a place, where Google shows map results built from business profiles before the web pages, so the profile, listings and reviews matter as much as the website.
